Smuttynose was also the site of a grisly double murder on the cold night of March 6, 1873. Six Norwegian immigrants—three couples—lived in what would become known as the “Hontvet House,” which was owned and operated as a boarding house by the family of Celia Thaxter on Appledore Island. The men had sailed to the mainland on a bait-buying trip but had not returned by nightfall.

A Royally Good Time
There are nine full-time staff members who work in the Portsmouth office and on Star Island and four seasonal staff members who work on island. In 1986, Captain Whittaker retired as did the namesake Viking Cruises along with the 540 passenger vessel Viking Sun. Bob and Robin Whittaker formed the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company and launched the M/V Oceanic and M/V Thomas Laighton.

The M/V (motor vessel) Thomas Laighton was named for a famous “Shoaler”, politician and businessman. As keeper of the Isles of Shoals Lighthouse with his family on White Island, Thomas Laighton later founded the Appledore House Hotel. This began the resort era of the Isles of Shoals and NH seacoast in the mid 19th century. There are many ports to visit across the British Isles, from Holyhead in Wales, to Lerwick in the remote part of Scotland, to bustling Belfast in Northern Ireland. Fortunately, the British-isles cruise ports are a combination of both urban and rural destinations, so you can choose whatever suits your cruise style.

Isles of Shoals
Suddenly, in the depth of the night, they were awoken by a brutal attacker swinging an ax. The third, Maren, escaped and hid among the rocks with her dog Ringe. To maximize our time cruising the islands this tour does not stop at the Isles of Shoals.
During the Revolution, however, everyone was evacuated to the mainland. Those who returned to Star Island after the Revolution acquired a reputation for “laziness, drunkenness, lawlessness, and cohabitation,” and the community never returned to its former prominence. More impressive than his praise or his unmatched contributions to the exploration of New England were the schools, or shoals, of cod near the islands, in an abundance never before seen by European fishermen. By the eighteenth century, the Isles of Shoals were considered one of England’s most valuable colonies because of the astounding quantities of cod caught, dried, and shipped home.
Since then, we have been in contact with a number of boat companies along the New Hampshire coast and as far south as Boston. After meeting with five boat owners, we selected Captain’s Fishing Charters to provide conference transportation services for next year. Last year began a new era for Star Island and the Isles of Shoals. The regular daily summer ferry no longer runs from Portsmouth to Star Island. Visitors to the Oceanic Hotel will have their own ferry as will students at the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore. This guide is for them and for everyone who wants to see or visit the rocky historic Isles of Shoals.
Stay well clear of low and featureless Duck Island, which tends to merge with Appledore. In particular, beware of long Southwest Ledge if you are running a course from the red groaner “24YL” to nun “2” off the northwest tip of Appledore. From nun “2” head for red-and-white bell “IS” at the harbor mouth. There are opportunities for individuals and families to spend the night and experience all Star has to offer outside of conferences with our Personal Retreat Program. Rooms are basic with shared bathrooms in the hotel and more private accommodations in the ancillary motel. Charter a private boat ride aboard the 49 passenger M/V Heritage.
We are confident that the change will have very little impact on most conferences and will do our best to make the transition to a new ferry service as easy as possible for everyone. A long term agreement with Captain’s Fishing Charters is being discussed this winter and by the summer, we will be able to apprise you of the nature of ferry services for the next several years. If the open sea is your desire, join us for the Isles of Shoals cruise. Leave Portsmouth Harbor and discover the nine legendary islands located six miles off the coast. Expertly narrated history tours of Portsmouth harbor, the Isles of Shoals and the New Hampshire Seacoast. The British Isles are known for their gorgeous green countryside, which is home to world-renowned natural attractions, historic towns and a plethora of castles.
The Thomas Laighton features three full bars, one on each level. It is US Coast Guard certified and inspected and operated by licensed and experienced captains and a friendly crew. She is well suited for the weather and sea conditions around the Shoals and should be able to make the trip in less than an hour. Use of a vessel this size will mean reverting to the tradition of many years ago when two round trips were necessary to bring the conferences to the island.
